Digital Mom Advice Tip #55: What’s a hashtag?
It’s been amazing seeing more and more moms get involved in social media. I love that my close girlfriends from home, who weren’t even into Facebook a year ago… have now even dipped into the Twitter waters.
It’s fantastic!
I laugh because once or twice a week I’ll get a random text from one of my friend’s asking me what things are… DM, Retweet, hashtag, etc.
So… I thought I’d explain a hashtag today on Digital Mom Advice.
Here’s what Twitter defines a hashtag as:
The # symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages.
Hashtags help you find interesting Tweets:
- People use the hashtag symbol # before relevant keywords in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets to show more easily in Twitter Search.
- Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets in that category.
- Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet.
- Hashtagged words that become very popular are often Trending Topics.
My best advice to you… if you see a hashtag that interests you, follow it. You’ll have a bunch of people with the same interest right there with you!
